Canada's first new LEED Gold
building!
White
Rock, British Columbia
Busby + Associates Architects

The White Rock Operations Centre represents a strong commitment on behalf of
the City of White Rock to provide leadership in more responsible building
practices.
The building has a green roof to reduce the urban heat island effect, gravel
parking lots to maximize infiltration of rainwater, and nearly 400 m2
of asphalt revegetated with native species. Stormwater is collected in a
storage tank for flushing toilets and also collected from city streets to help
heat and cool the building.
The project includes a commitment to purchase renewable energy, generate solar
electric power onsite, and use of high efficiency fixtures and mechanical system
to reduce energy consumption. Indoor air quality is enhanced with natural
ventilation, operable windows, and direct ventilation in high contaminant areas
to reduce pollutants. Daylighting is a main feature in the building with
sunshades, wall trellis, overhangs, and light shelves to optimize lighting and
control heat gain.
Careful attention was paid to building materials to ensure that all new
materials were regionally manufactured and that as many recycled and reused
materials as possible were used in construction. Ninety-nine percent of the
original building was recycled, diverting almost a million tonnes of waste from
the landfill.
