Promoting intelligent building methods and materials for a sustainable future

St. Mary's Hospital, Isle of Wight, UK

Ahrends Burton and Koralek (ABK) architects

1991

This 17,400m2 hospital achieved a 50% saving in fuel energy by its third year of operation.  The radial plan minimizes main services and heat recovery routes to the centralized plant.

The design includes:

  • Enhancing and controlling naturally produced heat

  • Lighting and ventilation by introducing heat recovery systems from air and water

  • Using techniques of energy management to ensure maximum benefit through correct functions of these systems.

In addition a strategy for the ease, cost and safety of maintenance is considered at an early stage.
