The Mountain Equipment Co-op in Ottawa is a 2,150
m2 retail store strategically located to encourage use of public transportation.
Stormwater is collected in a
cistern. Light coloured crushed stone roofing ballast enhances infiltration in
addition to reducing the urban heat island effect. Existing trees and new
native plantings are used to shade the building and paved surfaces.
The retail facility was designed to consume only 50 % of the energy as specified
by the Model National Energy Code (MNECB). The building envelope is airtight and
has insulation values 4 times the MNECB required levels. The lighting load
is less than 50% of the MNECB due to the use of daylighting strategies and
occupancy sensors. Pending public approval, 10 % of the electrical energy
usage is to be supplied by a wind turbine.
Water consumption 30% below the MNECB is achieved with high efficiency fixtures
and appliances, waterless urinals, sensor activated faucets, and low-flow
toilets.
The design minimizes the need for interior finishes. Finishes needed were
selected on the basis of simplicity, low maintenance, minimal environmental
impact, high durability and low VOC emissions. Salvaged douglas fir, sealed
plywood, recycled gypsum board, VOC free adhesives and EcoLogo paints are some
of the materials selected which are more environmentally responsible and
contribute to healthier indoor environmental quality.
